The Department is required by statute (the Water Code) to prepare updates of this plan every five years, and to form an advisory committee to assist in this effort. The Advisory Committee (AC) is comprised of a cross-section of diverse stakeholders. It is a consensus-seeking group of statewide organizations to represent communities of interest. DWR is committed to an open and transparent process that seeks participation and deliberative input from stakeholders and the general public. An evolution from Water Plan Update 2005, the Advisory Committee for the next update will focus on statewide policy issues and initiatives, while regional coordination and in-depth technical discussions are delegated to other work groups.
The Water Plan Update describes statewide water supplies, water uses, and actions that could be taken by water agencies to improve future water supply reliability. Using large group meetings held every six to eight weeks, more frequent smaller work groups and workshops, and many public briefings, DWR seeks a broadly informed and consensus-seeking process. All meetings are open to the public, and noticed in advance. As part of their membership obligation, AC members brief their constituencies on key developments.
