The water portfolio data and information for the California Water Plan Update consists of the following items:

Flow Diagrams
The flow diagrams to be presented in Update 2005 are an expanded version of the diagram that appeared in Bulletin 160-83 on page 88. The flow diagram characterizes the water cycle in that it begins with the sources of water, such as precipitation and inflows into the state, and attempts to track all the water as it flows through many different uses until it reaches its destination in the ocean, inland sea or the atmosphere. Diagrams are prepared for each of the 10 hydrologic regions, mountain counties region and for the state. Each of the components of the flow diagram can be found in the visual flow diagram and the table. (See Statewide or Regional Reports or see flow diagrams (.pdf, 1.2 mb) in the water portfolio of Update 2005).

Water Balances

Water balances and summaries are computed for applied water use, net water use and depletion, for each planning area, region and the state. (See Statewide or Regional Reports).

Supplemental Data Tables
Data tables are available for various items that supplement the water balances, flow diagrams, or regional summaries. Also, some time series data tables are available in order to provide historic trend information for various items of interest. (See Water Plan data).

Narratives
Regional narratives and data summaries are to provide more insight into the particular hydrologic conditions, year specific events, and water management. (See Regional Reports for more information).

Water Quality
The water quality basin plans prepared by the SWRCB and RWQCB will become part of the California Water Plan.  The basin plans along with other water quality reports are integrated into the water portfolio.

Water Portfolio Data

Water Portfolio Data Workbook (.xls, 9 MB)
The workbook is a very large compilation of spreadsheets that includes flow diagrams, water balances, data tables, and various figures that are used in the California Water Plan. The first worksheet in the workbook is the Index, which helps one manuver around the workbook.

The 'balances spreadsheet' converts raw data into finished outputs.  Data is inputted by staff at either the Planning Area (dedicated use and supplies) or Hydrologic Region (precipitation and reservoir storage) level.  Input data is broken down into fine, specific details.  Formulas in the Balance sheets ("Water Use and Distribution of Dedicated Supplies"), Flow Diagrams, and Flow Diagram Tables ("portfolios") compile the detailed input data by use and supply type, to develop a picture of water uses in the state.  Data is reported by Planning Area, Hydrologic Region and Statewide.

The spreadsheet file is a working document.  The first sheet is an index page that both diagrams the spreadsheet and contains hyperlinks to assist in negotiating the spreadsheet file.  There are a number of compilation sheets located near the middle of the document (between the data entry sheets and flow diagrams) that format portfolio data for export to existing ag and urban water supply models.  Sheets have been added at the end of the workbook to present the compiled data in summary, bar chart, and "palm tree" format, in addition to the portfolios, balances and flow diagrams.

Regional Reports
Regional summaries of the water portfolio data found in the Water Portfolio Data Workbook can be found in the Regional Reports.
